OptSex stands for “Online-Praxis Training—Sexuality Education Xperience” Praxis is ultimately defined as the action and practice of any art, science or skill. In this case, praxis is referring to the “how to’s” of sexuality education. For too long praxis in the Human Sexuality Field, at large, and more specifically for these purposes, within the realm of Sex Education, there has been an obscene deficiency in a “boots on the ground” approach to sex education that can be generalized across populations and subspecialties that exist within the sexual health field. Although this program does not pretend to be the end all be all approach to sexuality education, as Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” The spirit of OPTSex was created around the sentiment of beginning with an operationalized approach and working together to continue to contribute to the evolution of the Sexual Health Field.

The OptSex program is based on a feminist approach to Sexuality Education which can be translated across subspecialties and integrated with other theoretical paradigms. Students who enroll in this SYNCHRONOUS only course will learn, collaborate, and engage in live, planned, praxis which will allow students to gain honest and respectful feedback which will allow them to gain and give support from and to their peers, but to create their personal approach to their work within the realm of sexuality education. Because what a Sex Educator does can be so vastly different, it is important that students who are aspiring to learn how to integrate sex education approaches into their work, gain practical experience engaging in experiential, hands-on learning that allows them to build confidence and expand their unique presence, skill, and theoretical knowledge to continue their journey as a competent and professional sex educator.

Dr Ashley Grinonneau earned her doctoral degree in Counselor Education & Supervision: Marriage & Family Therapy Track and is dually licensed as a Supervising Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC-S) and an Independent Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor (IMFT-S) who has earned the AAMFT Approved Supervision Designation. She is also nationally recognized as a Certified Sex Therapist (CST) through the American Association of Sexuality Educators Counselors & Therapists (AASECT) and an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor (CSTS) of aspiring sex therapists and counselors.
It should be noted that Dr. Ashley has also done extensive training to hone her skills as an educator teaching sexual issues. She has taught Sexuality Education courses and workshops at both local and national levels and has extensive experience educating and advocating for sexual health and wellness since 2003. Presently, she serves as the Director of the Sexuality Training Institute and The Ohio Center for Relationship & Sexual Health. As a professional who emerged into the sexual health world within the community mental health context, the passion project that crystallized into OptSex came from the desire to integrate a practical approach that is mindful of diversity, equity, and inclusion and and can be translated across populations. As someone who is mindful of the systemic elitism that can exist within the sexual health field, with her privilege in mind, Dr. Ashley desires to do her part to reduce the marginalization of underserved populations in order to contribute to the need for change within the sexual health field. It is her largest hope that the OptSex Model can be one of many educational constructs that can help contribute to the sexual health field.
